Brazilian Blowout, Japanese straightening & Black Hair Relaxers: What is the difference?

Black hair relaxer & Japanese hair straightening compared to Brazilian straightening change the actual structure of the hair. In doing so, there is an obvious difference between the new hair growth and the hair that has been treated.

Hair Straightening - Black Hair Relaxers

Traditional Black Hair Relaxers use sodium or guanidine hydroxide to break the chemical side bonds in the hair in order to remove curl from the hair. Guanidine hydroxide relaxers, better known as No Lye relaxers are less damaging than a traditional sodium hydroxide (Lye) relaxer because the chemicals used are not as strong.   No-Lye formulas tend to be applied to the hair for longer to get more of a straightening effect and reduce the risk of burning the scalp. The results are permanent and the hair’s new growth must be retouched every 6-8 weeks on average.

Hair Straightening - Japanese Hair StraighteningJapanese Hair Straightening is a cornstarch-based system originally developed for East Asian hair. The Japanese method is designed to create a non-coating, straightening system that uses heat oxidation to seal the hair and rebuild it from the inside using the formulations and special irons that reach approximately 350 degrees. The Japanese straightening process is not suited to very kinky hair and is therefore not recommended for black hair. The results last as much as 6 to 9 months before needing to be retouched.

Hair Straightening - Brazilian BlowoutThe Brazilian Straightening Treatment process known as Brazilian Blowout was originally developed for Latina hair. The Brazilian Blowout uses keratin based bonding technologies, with the aim to improve the health and condition of the hair by creating a protective protein layer around the hair shaft to eliminate frizz and smooth the cuticle. The Brazilian Blowout will last approximately 10-12 weeks. It is intended to be a cumulative treatment, so the more you have the treatment, the healthier the hair will be and the longer the result will last.
