Brown Skin and Skin Cancer
Don't believe the Myth - people of colour DO get skin cancer.
We are far less likely to develop skin cancer (particularly nonmelanoma forms of cancer), but when we do get skin cancer we are more likely to have a higher rate of the advanced disease which can cause death:
Where do we get skin cancer? Studies have found that melanomas in brown skin develops mostly on our palms, fingers, soles, toes, areas that are easy to overlook.
Appearance - Commonly may appear in skin of colour as a singular dark nail streak on the hands or feet.
Family history Ensure you know if there is any cancer history in your family, this will help you to monitor that specific areas as well as general checks.
Awareness Be aware that you are at risk day to day not only when you are sitting on a beach.
Regular Checks Carry out monthly checks on your skin to identify any changes. Look for dark brown or black spots either new, changed colour, raised bump, increased in size or shape.
Protect Wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 everyday, not just when you go to the beah or on holiday/vacation.
