What hairstyle suits the shape of your face?

Do you have Iman's long shaped face or Angelina's square face? Your face shape is the starting point to choosing a new hair style. Your hair style is the next consideration. It's hard to be objective about your own face shape, so we have 2 ways of defining the shape of your face. Hair stylists or makeup artists are the ultimate judges of your face shape, but if you need a little help try the below.

Try one of the following to find the shape of your face...

DRAW the shape of your face

All you need is a mirror, Alice band and an old lipstick or an eyeliner.

1. Sit in front of the mirror and slick your hair back with the Alice band.

2. Use the lipstick/eyeliner to draw around your face in the mirror. Move away from the mirror and look at the shape.

3. Look at the below shapes next to see the shape that matches yours the best.

MEASURE the shape of your face

To find out the shape of your face, measure it with a tape measure or ruler. You will take the following measurements (write each measurement down).

1. Measure your face across the top of your cheekbones.

2. Measure across your jaw line from the widest point to the widest point.

3. Measure across your forehead at the widest point. Generally the widest point will be somewhere about halfway between your eyebrows and your hairline.

4. Measure from the tip of your hairline to the bottom of your chin.

Oval Face - Length equal to one & a half times width.
Round Face - Wide as it is long with a round chin.
Square - Wide as it is long with a square jawline & forehead.
Heart - Narrow at jaw line, wide at cheekbones and/or forehead.
Long - Longer than it is wide.

Hairstyles for Oval Shaped Face

Oval Shaped Face

Just about any hair shape looks good on you. Your features allow you to wear a wider range of styles than any other face shape.

Curly hair: Long and thick hair - ask your hairdresser to cut it so the curls are looser, to take the thickness out. Then sweep the top part back for a soft, flirty romantic look. For a short hairstyle a messy style is ideal - give it shine with a serum.

Fine Hair: Long hair - soft layers throughout, best way to add volume. If you want to go super short, you're in luck, your hair texture and face shape is ideal to carry off this look.

Medium-textures hair: Try a flirty, flicky razor cut. Or a short bob longer at the sides and shorter at the back would look wonderful.

Fringe options: If you have thick hair, you could go for a sexy short fringe or one that's long and blunt. For fine hair, a long wispy fringe is for you.

Avoid: Covering up your features with heavy bangs, or too forward-directed styles. In wearing your hair style on your face, you'll lose your face shape behind the hair. It may appear to add weight to your face.

Hairstyles for Round Shaped Face

Round Shaped Face

Full-looking face with a round chin and hairline. Widest point is at the cheeks and ears. Contrary to belief, lots of hairstyles suit a round face.

Medium to long curly hair: Choppy layers through the back and the bottom of your hair to give it some shape.

Straight hair: The golden rule to remember is that round faces need a style that has longer pieces that fall onto your face to lengthen your cheeks - making them look slimmer and your cheekbones more structured. Graduated bob cut on to the face and higher at the back. Alternatively, a choppy shag.

Fringe options: Long wispy fringe will look great and suit fine hair. And if your hair is thicker, a longer fringe that you can sweep to the side will lengthen your face.

Avoid: Don't go near a short blunt fringe - it will only emphasise a round face. Chin length hair with a rounded line that mirrors face’s circular shape. No Center partings. Short-short crops, straight "chopped" bangs. Fullness at side of ears. Whether your hair is long or short, if it's prone to a wave or curl, avoid at all costs ending up with a rounded 'bubble cut'.

Hairstyles for Square Shaped Face

Square Shaped Face

A style, which is feathered at the top and soft around your ears, is an instant disguise for a square jaw. Achieve some roundness to the shape and some height at the crown or bangs.

Fine hair: A long poker-straight cut is absolutely perfect and soooo flattering for a wide jaw.

Curly hair: coax soft, sexy, textured layers around your face to soften your strong features.

Fringe Options: A fringe that touches the eyebrows, longer and layered at the sides (except for curly hair). Thick/Curly/Frizzy hair, layer the fringe throughout to thin it out.

Avoid: Really short cuts/above the jaw line will exaggerate the squareness of your face shape. Long straight styles that accentuate square jawbone. "Linear" straight bangs or center parts. A straight bob ending at the jaw line. You can wear a layered bob, however it should end above or below the jaw line.

Hairstyles for Heart Shaped Face

Heart Shaped Face

A Heart Shape Face is basically an Oval Shaped Face but with a narrower chin. Choose a style that will create volume around the bottom of your face. But whatever your hair type, don't have your hair too long. Four inches below your shoulders is ample.

Thick, long hair: Soft layers to soften your chin area - keep the layers cut as close to your jaw line as possible so that they can fall on to your face.

Long, curly locks: Look fantastic on a heart-shaped face if you keep them soft and loose. Cut them round so that they lightly fall on to your face.

Short bob shape is a safe and sexy style. This works best on curly or wavy hair, just don't let it grow any longer than your jaw line. Insist on a choppy cut around your chin - not a thick, blunt, bush of locks.

Fringe options: A shorter, wispy fringe is low-key but will look gorgeous, especially if your hair is quite thick. A blunt fringe is really dramatic and will work well on all hair.

Avoid: Short, full styles that emphasize upper face. Height at the crown. Severe, slicked back looks. If you are a dramatic heart shape, the short full styles with tapered necklines which emphasize the upper face will make you look top heavy. Too much height at the crown will give the appearance of a longer and narrower chin.

Hairstyles for Long Shaped Face

Long Shaped Face

Long and slender, about the same width at forehead and just below cheekbones. May have a very narrow chin or a very high forehead.

Long, fine hair: Go shorter so hair looks thicker and your face looks wider. A cut that's unstructured, which you can wear messy, is a time saver. If you like a more groomed look, one length cut will suit you and give you that edge of sleek glam.

Thick, coarse and curly: Lucky you - your hair is a playground and the results can only be positive. Short razor cut - edgy, sexy and full of texture.

Fringe options: Unfortunately in the fringe area it's not a case of anything goes for you. Disguise a long forehead with a thick blunt-cut fringe - you'll be surprised how feminine it makes you look. Steer clear of a fringe if you have a small forehead - it will just emphasise the length of the rest of your face.

Avoid: ToO much hair length as your face will look even longer! Too much height lengthens your face. Center parts. Make sure you avoid like the plague shoulder -length and straight styles.
